James Sidney David, age 92, passed away Dec. 26, 2023 in Jackson, Tenn.
Sidney was born to William Edward and Eula Cook David on April 25, 1931, and raised alongside five brothers and three sisters in the Beech Bluff Community. He attended Northside High, where he played on the school’s first football team. In 1952, he married Omega Coplin, his wife and best friend of 54 years, with whom he had three daughters: Mona (Bob) Boyd, Pat (Mike) Smith, and Shelly (David) Burngasser. He was a loving grandfather to Jay, Lauren (Corey), Trey (Jessie), Sidney (Christopher), and Tyler (Allexus).
A proud Jacksonian, Sidney was dedicated to civic pursuits. He served as Master Seargent of the Tennessee National Guard, Major of the Tennessee Defense Force, and Magistrate of the Madison County Court – in this position, he officiated dozens of weddings. He was an Ambassador of the Jackson Chamber of Commerce and a Commissioner of the Madison County Civil Service and Planning Commissions. He served as Board Member for a number of non-profit organizations: The Babe Ruth Baseball League, Golden Gloves Boxing, JACOA, Youth Town, and the Miss Tennessee Scholarship Pageant. He and Omega were the first couple named as Lifetime Members of the Jackson Jaycees.
Sidney was a 32nd Degree Mason, a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, and an Exchangite. In 1976, the Tennessee Exchange Club named him “Man of the Year.”
Sidney is probably best known as owner of Sidney David Florist, a family business that served West Tennessee for over fifty years. He was an avid golfer, with much of his time spent at Woodland Hills Golf & Country Club, where he was a founding member. His ability to cure warts with only the touch of his hands is among Jackson’s great lore.
Sidney was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and brothers Doug and Wayne. He is survived by his daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren: Lilly, Jayden, Roman, Harrison, and Julian. He also leaves behind siblings Bobby, Vaughn, Jerry, Nell, Nancy and Ann, their families, and countless friends.
SERVICES: Visitation with the David family will be held Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2024, beginning at 12:00 p.m., in the chapel Arrington Funeral Directors with service to follow at 2 p.m. Interment will follow at Beech Bluff Cemetery.
