Richard "Rick" Alan Mccune Ii

Richard “Rick” Alan McCune, II departed this life peacefully on January 9, 2023 in Nashville, TN at the age of 73.

Rick was born to the late Richard Alan and Margaret “Peggy” Wampler McCune in Pittsburgh, PA on April 9, 1949. He swam competitively in swim meets from a young age and was co-captain of the varsity swim team at McKeesport High School, where he graduated in 1967. Rick was awarded a swimming scholarship to the University of Iowa in 1967. While there, he competed against Mark Spitz and lost the race by two one-hundreths of a second. Later, he transferred to Clarion State College in Clarion, PA, where he graduated. He was on the first championship team at Clarion and they would go on to win the next 20 years. As an adult, he swam in YMCA Masters Swimming, where he swam competitively and won many medals. In 1995, at the age of 46, he won the first place medal for the 100-yard free style National YMCA Masters Nationals Swimming Championship in Florida. At this event, he swam against many contestants who were much younger. After moving to Jackson, he enjoyed swimming at the Lift and interacting with all his swimming buddies there. Swimming and the Pittsburgh Steelers were his passions from childhood until his death.

He began his professional life in the food industry at Potter McCune (POMCO), the family business that his grandfather founded in McKeesport, PA. In the 1970s, he worked at POMCO’s Institutional Foods business in Jackson, TN. His career took him to Memphis, Malone, and Hyde, and then later to Simplot. Moving back to PA, he was employed by J&J Food Service in Meadville, PA, and finally ended his career as a senior sales professional at C.A. Curtze in Erie, PA. He later retired and moved to Jackson, TN in 2008. Rick was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Jackson, TN.

Aside from his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Stella “Ren” Frankland McCune; and brother, Bill McCune.

Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife, Nelda Kennedy McCune of Jackson, TN; son, Richard Alan McCune, III (Charlee) of Lebanon, TN; stepsons, Jim Harrison (Tonya) of Knoxville, TN and Andrew Harrison (Jennifer) of Memphis, TN; and nieces, Alexis McCune Secosky (Matthew) of Pittsburgh, PA, Bridgett McCune Custer (Andy) of Portland, OR, and Lee Keel Nichols (Houston) of Jackson, TN.

A memorial service will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 21, 2023 at the First Presbyterian Church in Jackson, TN with a reception to follow. A private family burial will take place at Ridgecrest Cemetery.
