A home going service for Meldon Cowsert, 87, will be held at 1:00 PM today, Wednesday, January 20, 2010 in the chapel of Arrington Funeral Directors with his son-in-law, Rev. Glynn Jones officiating. The family will be receiving friends today from 11:00 AM until the time of service. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Selmer, TN with a committal service at 2:30 PM. Mr. Cowsert died on Monday, January 18, 2010 after an extended illness. Arrington Funeral Directors is in charge of arrangements.Meldon was born to Early and Lorene Cowsert in Rutherford, TN on August 2, 1922. He completed his education in Gibson County Schools. During WW II, he served his country in the Pacific Theater and the Central European Theater with the US Army attaining the rank of T Sgt. As a combat infantryman with HQ Co, 1st Battalion, 342nd Infantry. Upon discharge, he went into lumber and millwork sales for various companies. Mr. Cowsert retired from Madison Millwork of Jackson, TN in 1990, but kept in the wood business by being an avid woodcrafter. Mr. Cowsert was an excellent golfer for many years on area links, and hit a hole-in-one while a member of the Humboldt County Club.Mr. Cowsert was a charter member of St. Andrew United Methodist Church having served as past President of the United Methodist Men, Chairman of the Official Board, Sunday School Class President and Lay Leader. He was a member of St. John?s Masonic Lodge # 332 and was a 33rd degree Mason.Preceding Mr. Cowsert in death were his parents, Early and Lorene Cowsert, and great-grandson Briley Len Davis.Mr. Cowsert is survived by his wife of almost 68 years, Pansy; a daughter, Pam Jones and her husband Glynn, granddaughters, Amye Davis and husband Len all of Jackson and Ashley Dismuke and husband Craig of Germantown, TN; and great grandchildren, Carley and Brett Davis and Madison, Lindsey and Ingram Dismuke.
