Our beloved Mother, Mary Louise Flagg Flanagan, 93, died peacefully February 3, 2022, at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital.
She was born on March 26, 1928, in Brookline, MA the daughter of the late Jewett Taylor Flagg and Charlotte Brooks Flagg. Mary Louise was preceded in death by her husband William Stuart Flanagan, Sr., and her sister Nancy Ann Secor. She was devoted to the Lord and her family and loved being a member at All Saints Anglican Church.
Her parents relocated to Florence, AL where she spent her early years. She was an advanced equestrian and won the ages 13 and under World Championship for Five Gaited Horses on Queen of Hearts at Madison Square Gardens in 1939. She attended Saint Margaret’s School for Girls in Waterbury, CT, and graduated in 1948 from Pine Manor College in Brookline, MA. Returning home she married her long-time love, Bill. Mary Louise was defined by her style, intelligence, and quick wit. She had a sharp mind for strategies in business and life; was a voracious reader, loved animals, bridge, and playing the piano. Mary Louise had a unique flair for collecting art and antiques, and interior design.
Mary Louise and Bill returned to Florence, AL in 2002 for their retirement years. After Bill’s death, she moved to Jackson, TN where she focused on her family, church, and her love of reading. Once she joined the Jackson-Madison County Library, she read over 1,000 books. She was independent and happy to remain living in her own home.
She is survived by four children: William Stuart Flanagan, Jr. and wife Martha of Nashville, TN; Amy C. Flanagan and friend Walter Sipes of Mt. Pleasant, SC; Charlotte Victor Burch and husband Bruce of Jackson, TN; Jewett Flagg Flanagan and wife Donna of Vestavia Hills, AL. She leaves behind a legacy of five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren: William Stuart Flanagan III and wife Tavi and their sons Liam, Aidan and Roan; Elizabeth Brooke Flanagan and husband Michael Norris and their children Charlotte, Mina and Alex; Nicholas Alexander Flanagan and partner Shannon Lhotsky and their daughter Isla Louise Flanagan; Mary Rose Flanagan Kassouf and husband Jonathan; Jenna Flanagan Dorlon and husband John and their daughters Olivia and Lucy.
We are thankful to God for a faithful mother, wife, sister, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend.
SERVICES: Memorial services will be held Sunday, February 13, 2022, at 2:00PM at All Saints Anglican Church, The Reverend Wes Gristy officiating. The Ushers are William A. Slack and Carl V. Diffee. The family will receive friends immediately after the service.
