Marjorie Hudson Vaughan, age 97, died Friday, June 9, 2023, at Somer Oak Senior Living in Somerville, TN Born in Camden, TN on September 27, 1925, she was the daughter of Philemon Walter Hudson and Nona Emiline Lewis Hudson. She was the next youngest of twelve children and grew up in the depression, getting her first pair of non-hand-me-down shoes upon graduation from high school. Marge remained close to all her siblings and helped care for a number of them as they aged.
In 1945, she married William M. (Bill) Vaughan Jr. and shared a life with him until his death in 2015, just a few days shy of their 70th anniversary. Together they had 4 children, 9 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
As a United Methodist pastor’s wife, Marge was known and deeply loved by congregations across West Tennessee and West Kentucky. Her quiet but deep Christian faith, gentleness, and sweet spirit endeared her to church members, neighbors, and, of course, her family. She lived the last six months of her life at SomerOak Senior Living, where she received extraordinary compassion and care. At the same time, the director of SomerOak said Marge was one of the sweetest residents they ever had with them.
In her 40s Marge took up golf in order to join her beloved husband Bill, who had been an avid golfer all his life. Marge loved for others to know that she had 6 holes in one to Bill’s 3!
She loved to walk and up until the age of 96, walked no less than 2 miles a day. Her neighbors in Jackson, where they lived following Bill’s retirement, were in awe of this woman in her 90s doing loops around the neighborhood on her walker every day.
Marge was a loving mother, grandmother, great and great-great-grandmother, who never tired of telling each and every one of them that she loved them to the sky. On her death bed, she spread her arms out wide to let some of her grandchildren know that she loved them “Thisssss much.”
Those left to cherish her memory are her sons, Dick Vaughan (Carolyn) of Bartlett, TN, and Billy Vaughan (Joni Laney) of Memphis, TN, and daughters, Susan Sandefer (J.R) of Eads, TN and Candace Lehrer (Paul) of Bethel Springs, TN, along with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
SERVICE: There will be a private family graveside service.
Her four children request that any memorials be made to the church or charity of one’s choice.
