He was born in Washington, D.C., on July 30, 1943. At that time his father was a member of the Inventors’ Council as part of the war effort. John grew up in Griffin, Georgia; and then at the age of 13 moved to Beltsville, Maryland. During high school he was a well-liked good student, was on the track team, and worked on the year book. After high school he attended Lassen College in California to pursue a degree in Forestry. Unfortunately for health reasons he returned home; attended Strayer Business College, and then worked in several jobs. In 1975 he returned with his parents to Ames, Iowa, close to the family farm dating from 1852. There he worked as a lab assistant at the U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal Disease Research Center until his retirement. After the death of his father, John and his elderly mother moved to Jackson to be closer to family. He joined Northside Methodist Church, and was an active church volunteer in many capacities. At a church event on February 9th, 2007, he met the love of his life Ginger Gearin. They were married the following year on July 12th.
John is preceded in death by his parents Halsey and Roberta Vegors of Ames, Iowa. He is survived by his loving wife Ginger, his sister Nancy Martin of Asheville, North Caroline; and his brother Dr. Bob Vegors & wife Sue of Jackson. He will be missed by a host of friends and family, including Richard, Cindy & Steve Spring.
