It was a hot and balmy day in Catadupa St. James, Jamaica, and the first day of July in 1947, when Laurel Whitehorn and Sylvester Campbell welcomed a strong, beautiful, and talented baby girl, Joanett Monica Campbell. She was the first born of her parents. She grew up in Jamaica where she successfully graduated, majoring in bookkeeping and data entry. She was also skillful as an organist, seamstress, and a home cook specializing in Jamaican cuisine.
It was on a Sunday that Joanett visited Faith Mission Church in Kingston, Jamaica, where she met her husband, Outon Alfonso McKinley. They married in 1966, and from that union came Grace Joanette, Judith Adrianna, Janique Anne Marie, and Orville Alfonso.
Her sense of adventure and desire for a better life inspired her to immigrate to the U.S, arriving first to frigid New York City, and then relocating to sunny Los Angeles, California. Over the next three decades, her life in Los Angeles consisted primarily of raising her four children, acting, and being a realtor.
Greener land and cleaner air plus the prospect of being closer to family moved Joanett to Jackson, Tennessee, where she studied and became a phlebotomist. She was affectionately known as the singing phlebotomist. She also sang in the choir at Englewood Baptist Church and was a faithful member of her Sunday school class.
Early in the morning of November 22, 2022, Joanett said goodbye to this earth and joined her heavenly family. Her beautiful life will be forever cherished by her precious siblings, Doreen and Donald Wallace, her four children and their spouses, 11 grandchildren and their spouses, 6 great-grandchildren, her Campbell siblings, and a host of loved ones that have transcended the bounds of friendship and became like family.
