Jimmy E. Chumney

Jimmy E. “Jim” Chumney entered his heavenly home on Thursday, May 11, 1023, at his Regency Retirement Village residence at the age of 90.
He was born on December 15, 1932, in Decatur County, TN, the son of the late James Coy and Vivian Volner Chumney. His wife of forty-five years, Bettye Pruitt Chumney preceded him in death in February 2016.
Jim proudly served his country in the United States Navy. An educator at heart, he was a math and science teacher and Assistant Principal at Bolivar Central High School for eleven years. He then joined the staff of Jackson State Community College in 1970 as an Associate Professor of Chemistry and Physics, retiring in 1996 after twenty-three years of service.
Active members of Northside Church, they were deeply involved with the Emmaus Community. They had the privilege of serving as coordinators of Lay Involvement weekends for the General Board of Discipleship of the United Methodist Church for over thirty years and carried teams to churches in ten different states. In later years, they served with the Aldersgate Renewal Ministries after they assumed sponsorship of these missions.
Jim is survived by his sons, Kenneth Eugene Chumney of Senatobia, MS, James Edward “Eddie” Chumney and wife Diana of Jackson, TN, and Luke “Butch” Alva Wadley III and wife Donna of Henderson, TN; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.
SERVICE: The funeral service for Jim will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, May 15, 2023, in the Chapel of Arrington Funeral Directors, with Rev. Gerry Campbell of Northside Church officiating. The burial will follow in Ridgecrest Cemetery.
The family will be receiving friends at Arrington Funeral Directors on Monday, May 15, 2023, beginning at 11:00 a.m. and continuing until the service at 1:00 p.m.
