Donald Eugene Sparks

Colonel Donald Eugene Sparks, affectionately known as Colonel Don, was a paragon of dedication, honor, and vivacity—a man whose life journey began on June 10, 1933, in Ashland, Kentucky. His earthly sojourn came to a close on December 29, 2024, in the serene surroundings of Jackson, Tennessee, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished by many.

A proud career man, Colonel Sparks served with distinction in the United States Army, embodying the very essence of military spirit. His unwavering commitment to his service was not merely a vocation but a profound calling that shaped his character, infusing him with great honor and dignity. While he held the rank of Colonel, those who knew him understood that his true title lay in his loving and caring nature—attributes that resonated in every interaction he embraced throughout his life.

Colonel Sparks was a man of many trades; his innate ability to mend and construct was nothing short of extraordinary. Whether inside the home or amid the great outdoors, he possessed a rare ingenuity that allowed him to fix anything that came his way. Memories abound of his tireless endeavors as he built forts for his grandchildren, instilling in them a sense of adventure and creativity that would last a lifetime. These cherished structures became treasured sanctuaries, where laughter and imagination flourished under his watchful eye.

Colonel Sparks recieved his bachelor's degree from Western Kentucky University. He also was a starting player for the Hilltoppers' Football team which won the 1955 Refrigerator Bowl. Upon graduation, Colonel Don, received his Army commission through ROTC where he began his distinguished military career spanning 29 years. He served in Korea and Viet Nam, and was a Squadron Commander in the 4th Infantry Division. Colonel Sparks also served as an instructor at the Army's Ranger School and was parachutist qualifed. His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star and the Legion of Merit. 

After Army retirement, Colonel Don managed Club Vita in Jackson, positively impacting all those he came in contact with. He was the sweetest, most genuine, and honest man, Colonel Sparks had a unique talent for making those around him feel significant and valued. Friends, family, and even brief acquaintances were touched by his compassionate spirit. His approach to life was imbued with love and warmth, qualities that made him a steadfast pillar in the lives of all who were fortunate enough to cross his path.

Colonel Don loved God and his actions exemplified his faith. He spoke as Jesus spoke, he served as Jesus served, and he loved as Jesus loved. In his greatest joy, his family was his proudest accomplishment. His love for them knew no bounds—an everlasting bond that will resonate through future generations. His indomitable spirit and unwavering support will remain with them long after his departure from this world.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Mary Lynn Sparks; daughters, Theresa Lever (Jim), Cindy Platz (Eric), Daphne Kimler (David), and Kasha Fugate (Jeff); grandchildren, Courtney Loy, Clark Sawyers, Ben Sawyers, Katie Lever, Timothy Lever, Maggie Ard, Ashland Kimler, Noah Kimler, Caleb Kimler, and Eliza Fugate; and great-grandson, Theodore. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Sarah Sparks.

A Funeral Mass will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 4, 2025, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with Father Graham officiating. The first visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Friday, January 3, 2025, followed by the Rosary. The second visitation will an hour prior to the Mass.  The burial will follow the Funeral Mass at Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery.

As we gather to remember Colonel Don, we celebrate a life lived with brave pursuits and tender affection. His footprints on our hearts will continue to guide us, and his legacy will forever illuminate the paths of those he loved.
