Daphene Kennedy departed this life on Tuesday, August 14, 2012 at the West Tennessee Veterans Home in Humboldt, TN. Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 17, 2012 at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Arrington Funeral Directors with Dr. E. Claude Gardner and Paul Norris officiating. Burial will follow in Highland memorial Gardens, Jackson, TN.Daphene was a member of North Jackson Church of Christ, having been baptized at an early age.She was born in Alamo, TN on October 21, 1923 to the late John Edward and Ada Revelle Daniel. She and her family moved to Humboldt, TN, where she was a graduate of Humboldt High School and serving as secretary of the Student Council.She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Kenneth, two brothers, Claxton and Height Daniel. She is survived by a brother, Douglas Daniel and wife Joyce; a sister-in-law, Gwen Daniel, three nieces, Sylvia Masters and husband Ron, Linda Lindley and Lisa Daniel and a nephew, Joe Daniel and wife Janie.During WWII, she worked in Washington, D.C. for the Coast Guard, The Bureau of Aeronautics and the Department of the Navy. Later she went to Jackson, Mississippi where she worked for the Veterans Administration, the Law Firm of Green and Green and was secretary at the Church of Christ. This is where she met her future husband, Kenneth. They were married in August 1952. Soon after their marriage he became ill and it was necessary to move in with his parents so they could help care for him while she worked at the U.S. Attorney?s office in Dallas, Texas. After her husband?s death in 1957, she came back to Humboldt to take care of her ill father. During this time, she worked at the Dyersburg Social Security office.She then attended Freed-Hardeman where she earned an Associate of Arts degree in 1962 graduating Cum Laude. She earned a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She then returned to Freed-Hardeman as a teacher. During her twenty-one year tenure at FHU, she taught English Composition, World Literature and French.She traveled to Paris, France, attended LASORBONNE and ALLIANCE FRANCAISA, took part in the Temple University-Paris program in 1969. Later she earned an interdisciplinary Master of Arts degree in France from McGill University in Montreal. Canada and studied at LAVAL University in Quebec, Canada.Daphene worked as a French interpreter, distributed literature and signed up Bible correspondence courses at the Church of Christ exhibit at the World?s Fair in Knoxville.She served as a FHU associate for many years, being treasurer of the National Chapter for several years.She was a good worker, a loyal friend and she helped many people in time of trouble. She had a hobby of providing assistance to various organizations that she considered worthwhile.After retirement she returned to Paris, France and did self-supported mission work for four years at the Church of Christ. She did secretarial work and other work, taught French and English, and was able to influence and aid numbers of refugees from various parts of the world, providing hospitality to number of people traveling through Paris.The family is requesting the memorial contributions be directed to the Freed-Hardeman Associates, c/o Freed-Hardeman University, 158 E.
