Dr. Charles Alfred Greathouse, age 89, of Jackson, TN went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, March 7, 2021.
Dr. Greathouse was born in Jackson, TN on November 22, 1931, the son of James Marvin and Mary Kierolf Greathouse. He graduated from Jackson High School, where he played basketball and softball. He served his country in the National Guard and the United States Army during the Korean War.
Dr. Greathouse returned to Jackson and attended Union University where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in Mathematics. After graduating from Union University, he attended the University of Texas and received his master’s degree in Mathematics. Next, he taught at Texas A&M, later moving to Tallahassee, FL to attend Florida State University where he received his Doctorate in Mathematics (topology). Dr. Greathouse during his teaching career held positions with the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, Vanderbilt, Samford University in Birmingham, AL, and Lambuth University.
Following his teaching career, Dr. Greathouse became a contractor and built many homes in Jackson including homes in the Timbers Subdivision.
His greatest joy in life was his volunteer mission trips where he shared the gospel of Jesus Christ in many countries including Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, Belize, Nicaragua, Russia, Brazil, India, and China. He taught himself several foreign languages in order to better witnessed to many people in schools and communities all over the world and led over 10,000 people to Christ.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Dr. William Marvin Greathouse and wife Ruth, sister Mary Cathryn Richerson and husband Claude, brother-in-law Johnny Moss, sister-in-law Mara Moss, and nephews Mark Greathouse, Ralph Richerson, and Joseph Richerson.
He is survived by his wife Sula Moss Greathouse of sixty-two years, daughters Sharon Greathouse of Jackson, TN, Janet Story (Bill) of Burke, VA, and Lynne Wright (Ken) of Piperton, TN. Dr. Greathouse is survived by four grandsons: Will Story, Josh Story, and Austin Story of Burke, VA, and Noah Wright of Piperton, TN; brothers-and-sisters in law: Tommy and Georgia Hughes of Mt. Juliet, TN and Jerry and Sharon Moss of Donelson, TN; nieces and nephews: David Richerson (Denise) of Smyra, GA, Stephen Richerson (Becky) of Midlothian, VA, Danny Richerson (Becky) of Liberty, MO, Tim Richerson of Ackworth, GA, Becky Martin (Ted) of Hermitage, TN, Beth Sykes (Mike)of Olathe, KS, Georgina Hughes of Mt. Juliet, TN, Richard Hughes (Stephanie) of Old Hickory, TN, Phillip Moss of Burns, TN, and Sarah Moss of Chicago, IL.
SERVICES: A Public graveside service with military honors will be held on Monday, March 15, 2021 at 1:00 PM at the Raines Cemetery near Gadsden, TN, with Dr. Mark Howard officiating.
