Billy Joe Thomas, age 89 of Jackson, passed away on Friday, October 14th, 2022, in Jackson, TN.
Billy Joe was born April 8, 1933, in Henderson County, TN and grew up in the Huron Community, the fourth of five children born to the late Johnny Roy Thomas and Carrie Isabelle Fowler Thomas. He is preceded in death by one brother, O’Neal Thomas and one sister, Magdalene Buck. He is survived by two sisters, Margaret Evans, and Cornelia Hall.
Billy Joe led a very full and active life. He served in the National Guard for eight years. He worked and retired as the Superintendent of the Street Department for the City of Jackson after 32 years from February 2, 1959, to September 17, 1991. During this time, he also served for seventeen years on the board of the Jackson City and County Employees Credit Union. After his retirement from the City of Jackson he began another career managing the Solid Waste division of the Jackson Health Department. He worked there for the next 23 years and retired on May 15, 2014. He built many good and lasting friendships throughout his professional life.
Billy Joe loved the Lord and served in the church at Nebo United Methodist as the song director for 54 years. He grew up in a loving, talented singing family and was one of the founding members of the original Jubilaires. He also sang with other gospel groups during the course of his life. His formative years growing up & working a farm with his family ran deep into the core of who he was. After leaving the farm he loved having a large garden and shared the fruits of his labor with family and friends.
Billy Joe’s other great love in this life was his family. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Martha Faye Little Thomas. He is preceded in death by a son, Terry, who is survived by his wife Teresa, their son Michael Thomas and his wife Andrea and their children, Nate, Abby, Amelia, and Mattie Jane, as well as their daughter Jamie Pettigrew and her husband Ray and their children, Ben, Brody, Blake, and Hattie Anne. Billy Joe is also survived by his other son Steve Thomas and his wife Donna, and their son Scott Thomas and his wife Amy and their children Payton and Brandon, as well as their daughter Lindsey Spencer and her husband Josh and their children, Olivia, Barrett, and Charles.
SERVICES: A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, October 17, 2022, in the chapel of Arrington Funeral Directors. Burial will follow in Nebo Cemetery near Lexington, TN.
The family will be receiving friends on Monday, October 17, 2022, from 11:00 a.m. until the service time at 1:00 p.m.
