Betty Freeland Myhr, age 95, the devoted wife for 66 years of the late Dr. Lamb B. Myhr of Jackson, TN, passed away peacefully on August 23, 2013 at Jackson General Hospital. Born on August 30, 1917 in Nashville, TN, Betty Myhr was the daughter of Gertrude King Freeland of Alice, Texas and Francis Eugene Freeland from Brownwood, Texas and co-founder of Hart, Freeland & Roberts of Nashville, one of the South’s largest architectural firms. She attended school in Nashville and received her B.A. degree in 1939 from Vanderbilt University where she was on the women’s swim and tennis teams. She worked at Vanderbilt University Hospital until her marriage in 1942 to Dr. Myhr and in 1948 she moved to Jackson with Dr. Myhr entering practice with Dr. Leland Johnston and with whom he joined The Jackson Clinic in 1950 as one of its original members. Not only was Betty a naturalist and loved the outdoors, her artistic talents were expressed in her extensive oil paintings and she was an active member of the sewing circle of Jackson. She continued her athletic skills thru her golfing career at the Jackson Golf & Country Club, and was former champion of the Women’s Golf Group of Jackson, always competing in the women’s club championships, several times runner-up, and in the Tennessee Women’s State Championship and other regional tournaments. She is predeceased by her husband Dr. Myhr, and three brothers, William R. Freeland of Lake Wales, FL, Eugene King Freeland of Tegucigalpa, Honduras and Martin Clark Freeland of Bluff City, TN. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She leaves three sons, L.B. Myhr, Jr. (Mary Jo Avery) of Memphis, Stephen L. Myhr (Alice) of Beech Bluff, TN David W. Myhr (Elizabeth) of Sevierville, TN, a granddaughter, Molly Avery Myhr Smith (Russell) of Memphis and two great grandchildren, Hayes Freeland Smith and Clara Avery Smith of Memphis and several step-grandchildren. Memorial service will be held Thursday, August 29, 2013 at 3:00 PM at the Arrington Funeral Directors chapel in Jackson, TN. Visiting hours will be held an hour before the memorial service with burial service following at Ridgecrest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be sent to the Dr. Myhr Fund for West Tennessee Healthcare Foundation, 620 Skyline Drive Jackson, TN 38301, the Evangelical Community Church of which she was a member or to the charity of donor’s choice.
